The origins of this event
go back 200 years. The first celebration was on the 17th of October 1810. The weeding of the crown prince Ludwig of Bayern and Princess Therese of Sachsen-Hildburghausen was celebrated in a big way.
A bank employee and cavalry Major Andreas of Dall’Armi had an idea of a horse race for this celebration. He suggested this to King Max I of Bayern. The King was excited about this idea and so a big celebration took place on the Wiese (which means Meadow).
After the big wedding, the name of the place was changed in honour of the bride Therese into Theresienwiese. The enthusiasm of the people was so great that immediately became clear that this festival should take place every year. Since 1872 has been celebrated in September because of the cold weather in October.
The Oktoberfest is famous for its beers and for the funfair. People from all European countries and even from other continents visit this famous event. More than six million people attend every year.
Children can enjoy the festival highlights, the rides from the swing to the carousel, and the high-tech rollercoaster.
Women usually wear a Dirndl (dirndl dress) and men wear Lederhosen (leather trousers). In the tents, there is live music and there is an amazing atmosphere. To visit the tents is free, but it is better if you book in advance because the tents have a limited number of spaces. Booking a table costs 350€ and a beer 12€. After 9 pm it is free to visit the tents, no booking is needed. They are open from 10 am till 10.30 pm every day. This event goes for 16 till 18 days and starts from mid-September to the first Sunday in October.
In Stuttgart, where I am from, we have an Oktoberfest too. It is called Cannstatter Wasen or Volksfest but it is similar to the one in Munich, Theresienwiese. However, it is not so huge as the Munich Oktoberfest and not so touristy.
I had an apartment in Bad-Cannstatt, Altenburg Lämmleshalde. It was on a hill with a view of the Cannstatter Wasen. It was so beautiful at night watching all the light from my living room. Even the Arena/Stadium called the Mercedes-Benz Arena was a beautiful view.
